MAGNETISM
VOCABULARY
attract - when objects are pulled toward each other by a magnetic force; unlike poles attract (north pole attracts a south pole) and like poles repel (north pole repels another north pole, and a south pole repels another south pole)
electromagnet - a magnet created by an electrical current; made by wrapping a wire around an iron core and connecting the wires to a power source to create an electrical current; this is a temporary magnet, because the magnetic field stops when the electricity stops
magnetic field - the area surrounding a magnet that exerts a push or pull effect on other magnets or magnetic objects made of certain kinds of metals: iron, cobalt, or nickel
magnetic force - the power of a magnet to push or pull on other magnets or magnetic objects
natural magnet - a magnet created by the earth called lodestone or magnetite; a kind of iron ore that can attract or repel other magnets or objects made of iron, cobalt, or nickel
permanent magnet - a magnet that doesn't lose its magnetic force
temporary magnet - a magnet that can lose its magnet force (for example, an electromagnet is a temporary magnet)
repel - when objects are pushed away from each other

Have you seen the "Northern Lights"? They are also known as the Aurora Borealis, and are created by the earth's magnetic field. You won't believe what's happening in the sky!
