FINDING APPROPRIATE BOOKS FOR YOUR CHILD
How do you know if a book is the right reading level for your child?
Five Finger Test
1. Open a book to a middle page.
2. Have your child read one page.
3. Have your child hold up one finger for each word s/he doesn't understand.
0 fingers - book is too easy (It's okay to read some of these books, just not ONLY easy books.)
1-5 fingers - book is just right
6 fingers or more - books is probably too hard

Want to know if your child's book is on his/her grade level? Go to Scholastic's Book Wizard and click on the "Grade Level Equivalent" button. Enter the book's title in the text box and click "Find Books".

Lexile leveling is a system some schools use (not CRE). This is still a useful website for locating grade-appropriate leveled reading books. Under "I don't know my Lexile measure" select "5th Grade". Select the appropriate button below that. Click on the green "Submit" button to the left. Click on one or more reading genres your child is interested in and click on "Submit" again.
